A priest from New York, Alex Bernier (Heath Ledger) helps a cop friend Mara Sinclair (Shannyn Sossamon) investigate the case of a dead French ambassador, whose body was covered with mysterious religious characters written in aramaic. Alex is sent by his teacher father Dominic to Rome to let the characters in the Vatican to decipher.
