A Masque of Madness (Notes on Film 06-B, Monologue 02)

Another movie from the author's series of Notes about the film follows the career of Boris Karloff, the iconic actor who worked with Douglas Sirkem or Peter Bogdanovich, but played even in the sub-prime shows for television. Pfaffenbichler no regard for the "high" and "low" art and inserts Karloffovy movies into thematically continuous and completely unexpected dialogues, which as a result interprets the film history objevněji, than it makes historical encyclopedia. An actor's career is not just a story of one personality, but also technological development and varying access to different topics and taboos. The image is not trying to administer a coherent interpretation of the artist's work and rather draws attention to the points of contact, when uncontrolled jumps in time. In the second plan also takes a loving opinion to the film medium, which is capable of synthesis of the sublime and the macabre. The director himself its unrestrained and well thought-out editing the film aptly describes as "a tribute to the great actors and a strange lesson on the history of film". (IFF Karlovy Vary)
