In the london apartment they live together two very different sister Helen (Yvonne Fourneaux) and Carol (Catherine Deneuve). Social Helen located full satisfaction in a sexual relationship with a married man, Michael (Ian Hendry), Carol, who is shunned by men and people at all, works as a manicurist. When Helen leaves with her lover to the sea, ceases to her lonely sister check: excuse from work for illness and closed in his apartment, racked by terrible sexual dreams... Director Polanski creates horror a study of mental disintegration of the personality of the girl, burdened with sexual inhibitions. The image, which for us was never cited (unless, exceptionally, in the Ponrepo under the name of Ugliness), contains graphic sequences of violence and terror, in no way however, does not comment and does not analyse: the camera captures the plot so that the viewer perceived the picture from the point of view unstable Carol, and so they become her disgust and loneliness also his loathing and loneliness. Madness in the film does not appear as the fate of the individual, but as a disease of the whole society. The Film, which he wrote himself, Polanski is a handful of screenwriter Gérard Boy, gained at the FACULTY in Berlin 1965 Silver bear.
