American horror story the Black cat (1934) in their titles refers to the inspiration of the eponymous short story of Edgar Allan Poe. Not with her, although practically nothing in common, but a good description of the world of poe's literary creation.In the foreground of the happening is an american writer Alison (David Manners - Dracula [1931], the Mummy [1932]), spending honeymoon with his wife Joan (Julie Bishop) in Hungary. In the train meets with a psychologist Werdegastem (Bela Lugosi - Dracula [1931], Werewolf [1941]), which is introduced into the modernist house of his longtime "friend", the architect Poelzig (Boris Karloff - Frankenstein [1931], tomb raider [1945]), from which, however, turns out to be zavilý a satanist. Werdegast is driven by vengeance for the loss of his wife and daughters and their duel becomes a struggle for the soul of Joan...the Bizarre plot takes place in an adequate environment (warped decorations, influenced by German expressionism) and is a full that we can bizarre characters. The director was an austrian émigré Edgar G. Ulmer (1904-1972), which for the first time next to each other occupied the two big stars of the horror movie of the thirties Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff (they appeared together in seven frames). He managed to get in the film, for its time bold hints of eroticism and unexpectedly brutal scenes, that from this only with the passage of time doceněného of the work is one of the most successful horror films of the thirties.
